[02182001.FTW] William Warriner, also known as Warringer, was the original ancestor whocame to Springfield, MA. in 1638. Tradition says that he eloped fromLincolnshire, England with Lady Clifford, daughter of Lord Howe, orHoward, an English Admiral, and made his home in Yorkshire, England. Hiswife died in England in 1619 and is buried in the Canterbury Churchyard.William appeared among the pioneers of Springfield in 1638. He was awidower at least 57 years old when he married Joanna Scant in 1639, somesay that she was Joanna Searl, but the record is clear that she wasScant. Jonna died in 1660 and in 1661 he married Elizabeth, widow ofLuke Hichcock, of Wethersfield, Conn. She was the mother of Hannah, Johnand Luck Hitchock, she survived him and then became the 3rd wife ofJoseph Baldwin of Hadley. William owned a large part of Springfield.His house stood where the old Courthouse now stands, on the north side ofthe First Congregational Church, in front of Court Square. He lived inSpringfield for 38 years. His birthplace and ancestry are unknown. That England was theland of his nativity is probable beyone all doubt. He seems to have beenone of the earliest of that name of whom history or tradition gives usany account. Tradition says that William Warriner, about the year 1600,eloped from Lincolnshire, England, with Lady Clifford (?), daughter ofLord Howe, or Howard, an English admiral, and made his escape - withother members of the family, who naturally would want to get out of theway of the offended and insulted nobleman - into Yorkshire. Whilecrossing a rive one or two of the Warriners were drowned. William andanother were saved, also the lady. And tradition further states thatWilliam settled in Yorkshire. "The English parish records of that period mention several Warriners, oneof whom in particular bears the name William. The parish records, copiedin the foot-note, establish a strong probability that the WilliamWarriner mentioned many times in the Canterbury Cathedral register, whohad children christened in that church from 1601 to 1614, who buriedseveral children in the Cantebury churchyard, whose wife, Alice wasburied there in 1619, and of whom all records in the books of CanterburyCathedral cease at that time, is the same William Warriner who elopedfrom Lincolnshire about 1600 with Lady (Alice) Clifford (?), and that heis the identical William Warriner who appeared among the pioneers ofSpringfield, Mass., in 1638. If this be the case, he was probably awidower, at least fifty-seven years of age when he married Joanna Scantin 1639, and about ninety-four when he died in 1676. And this isaltogether credible, for some of his descendants have lived beyond thatage. " William Warriner was an early settler of Springfield, Massachusetts wherehe served as constable, surveyor, selectman, and tithingman. He was madea freeman (or voter) in 1638. He was fined in 1640 for selling his canoeto some party outside the "plantation." He owned a considerable part ofwhat is now the heart of Springfield. He died intestate and the estate was valued at 160 pounds and included 56pounds worth of clothing and books. His widow Elizabeth and his childrenagreed that she would have one third of his estate during her lifetimeplus 15 pounds and she would live in the home.
